A New Year can provide the perfect opportunity to take a step back from your current situation and gain perspective on your goals and objectives, whether they are personal or work-related. In this blog post, I have highlighted five easy tips to help you make 2018 your best year yet.
1 – INVEST IN YOURSELF
I cannot express how important this is, and it is always one of the first things I discuss with my clients. If there is one thing you strive to do this year, prioritise investing in yourself. Quite often in life, we work to put others before ourselves. But just like an emergency situation on an aeroplane – where we fit our own mask before assisting others – we can’t help others until we ensure we are in the optimum place to do so.
Investing in yourself can take many forms – whether it is spending more time doing things that you love, or socialising more with friends, or simply taking time out to consider your life path, goals and objectives – but it is the most essential element to developing a sense of self and purpose.
2 – BE SELF-AWARE
Self-awareness is the key to success circles; that is, progressively moving from success to success, as each positive encourages another. Taking time to understand who you are and what you value is so important, and links with the first point of investing in yourself.
Sometimes, we can all be guilty of spending too much time focusing on what people think about you, rather than focusing on being self-aware and concentrating on what you want to be. Remember: people will always have an opinion of you, whether it is good, bad or indifferent. The moment you focus on being self-aware – and investing in yourself – you simply shut the mouths of naysayers!
If we don’t take time to become self-aware, you can end up in a circle which is quite the opposite to one of success! Being self-aware enables you to continuously move forward, grow and develop – 2018 is the year where you get to know you.
3 – THINK BIG, DREAM BIG, GET A VISION
Take this advice in this order. Thinking big and dreaming big is key to success – try not to let anyone or anything get in the way of your dreams and ambitions. But be sure that you can see the final vision – it musn’t overwhelm you, rather, it should inspire and encourage.
Having a goal – no matter how small or bit – is key to success. For without a goal, we have no markers of progression, and no marker of whether this has been succeeded. A vision keeps you on track, but keep it realistic and achievable, allowing it to expand and flourish over time.
4 – GET YOURSELF OUT THERE
It is very easy for every one of us to fall in to a comfort zone, and some times this can be only socialising with people that we know, whether they be work colleagues, friends of family members. To get the most out of this year, I would really encourage you to meet new people. It doesn’t matter if this is for business networking, friendship building or to simply meet new people in new environments.
So, go to that event or art class, or simply say hello to someone in your local café – the extent of this isn’t the fundamental part. If this is something you struggle with, you may surprise yourself with what you can do! Don’t know where to start? You can always join me at my all day, interactive event Rewire Yourself for Success in Cardiff this April.
5 – SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE INFLUENCES
Have you ever found yourself caught in a trap – whether with friends, family or work colleagues – where negativity pervades the thoughts of those surrounding you? This can be very difficult to overcome, but challenging negativity is key to success.
People can become deaf to themselves being negative, it can become a natural reaction to daily events and a repeated emotion. To be successful, surround yourself with people who get you charged and energetic – and remember, it is OK to be the person that encourages this!
